「互踢皮球」請不要說kick the ball around在溝通中適當地運用慣用語，可協助表達複雜的意思，達到言簡意賅的效果。有些英文慣用語與中文說法接近，如go in one ear and out in the other（左耳進右耳出），但有些則相差甚遠，千萬別照字面直譯，以免鬧出笑話。以下試舉五例：

1.The typhoon caused great damage, but government officials kicked the ball around. 颱風造成重大災情，但政府官員卻互踢皮球。
2.I envy someone who can eat like a pig but won't gain weight. 我羨慕可以像豬一樣大吃特吃，卻不會發胖的人。
3.That old man is very poor. He has to live on rice and soy sauce. 那位老先生很窮，只能吃白飯配醬油。
4.You should not use three-letter words with him. 你不該用三字經罵他。
5.My parents reminded me that marriage is no play. 父母提醒我婚姻非兒戲。

中文用「踢皮球」來表達推拖責任的意思，英文慣用語卻沒有kick the ball這樣的說法，較接近的用語是pass the buck。
2.I envy someone who can eat like a horse but won't gain weight. >各銀行購屋貸款利率
華人認為豬是代表很愛吃的動物，美國人則認 為馬才吃得多，故有eat like a horse這樣的說法。
3.That old man is very poor. He has to live on bread and water.
中文慣用「白飯配醬油」來表示日子過得很清苦，英文則是「麵包配白開水」，不難想像這是文化與飲食習慣所造成的用語差異。
4.You should not use four-letter words with him.
英文裡隱含性、穢物的髒話多半是由四個字母組成，如fuck、shit，所以別受到中文「三字經」的影響，正確用詞是four-letter words而非three-letter words。
5.My parents reminded me that marriage is no picnic.
no play是指「沒有玩耍」，例：All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.，表示「不是輕鬆好玩的事、非兒戲」應該用no picnic才對。
喔，原來這樣講才對！
